# Why start with damaged cartilage?

> About Renew Regenerative Med — Why Renew Regenerative Med starts with cartilage damage: a personal examination of published AOD-9604 research, without a medical practice behind the name.

**About this scorebook**

Renew is a generous word. Give the word a small, difficult object to account for.

## Cartilage preservation and replacement

The name Renew Regenerative Med suggests a return to something better. The [rabbit cartilage experiment](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26275694/) gives that thought something specific to argue over: cartilage with lower degeneration scores after an experimental intervention. The gap between that observation and a claim of renewal has become the central question of this scorebook.

An exact description that makes an attractive idea harder to say suits my temperament. If renewal means preservation, say preservation. If it means replacement, measure replacement. A good experiment could move my enthusiasm in either direction. The name can wait for the tissue.

## The site's remit

Renew Regenerative Med is my personal scorebook about published research. There is no doctor behind this title, no medical business and no clinic to attend. There is no prescribing or medicine sale here, and no appointment to arrange.

These essays are for thinking about experiments. They offer no medical advice or personal treatment decisions. A question about an actual knee or a medicine needs a qualified clinician who can assess the person concerned.

The laboratory and anatomical pictures are imagined illustrations. They do not identify the writer or document the original experiments.

## Replication and human joint studies

A human joint study with durable structural and functional outcomes could alter this scorebook considerably. So could a careful attempt to reproduce the animal result that failed to do so. I value either possibility more than another expansive description of regeneration. Replication would do more for the cartilage argument than another change of vocabulary.

The [reading list](/references) contains the experiments and assessments under discussion. The [contact page](/contact) explains the current limits on sending a correction.

Renew Regenerative Med is my cartilage scorebook about published research, not a medical business, and none of these arguments constitutes medical advice.
